As Hollywood desperately searches for their next Young Adult phenomenon, one of the front-runners seems to be DIVERGENT. Directed by LIMITLESS’s Neil Burger and starring future Mary Jane Watson, Shailene Woodley, the story takes place in a world where teenagers must choose which faction they will belong to, with the choices being Honesty, Selflessness, Bravery, Peacefulness, and Intelligence.
The cast has just grown with the announcement that Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz, and newcomer Ansel Elgort will all be taking on roles. Q is known for her roles as NIKITA in the hit TV show, and supporting roles in the likes of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, while most will recognise Kravitz from her role as Angel in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Elgort is making his debut appearance in the upcoming CARRIE remake. Elgort will play Caleb, Woodley’s twin brother, Q will be a tattoo artist called Tori, who is part of the selection process (like the sorting hat?) and Kravitz is good to go as Christina, a girl who befriends Woodley.
Based on a popular series of novels by Veronica Roth, this looks set to be a big franchise. However, let’s not forget about all the failed fantasy/chosen one epics that were meant to start franchises after HARRY POTTER. By the time these films hit the big screen will we be HUNGER GAMEd and TWILIGHTed out?
DIVERGENT is set for release on 21st March 2014.
