Last night, Fede Alvarez’ EVIL DEAD remake premiered to much acclaim at the SXSW Film Festival, with the subsequent Q & A session at Austin’s Paramount Theatre having the director confirm that work on a sequel is already underway, claiming “We already started writing Evil Dead 2″.

Fans of the original franchise, directed by Sam Raimi, made the latest intense hard-R rated horror a must-see as the film was announced for opening night. It was even more pleasing when Alvarez confirmed a number of weeks ago, there is no CGI in the film and everything was done using ‘old school’ prosthetics. The film went down a storm with fans revelling in the blood-soaked brutality and gory carnage with some suggesting the shocking red-band trailer is fairly tame compared to some scenes in the film.

It appears having the original creative team of Raimi, Robert Tapert and ‘Ash’ icon, Bruce Campbell producing, could prove a masterstroke for Sony when the film is released early next month. Pulling in fans old and new, and maybe a stubborn few that were furious about a remake of their beloved classic.

EVIL DEAD is released in US on the 5th April and the UK 12th April and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci and Elizabeth Blackmore. The brilliant official website went live recently and leaving you to explore more of the creepy cabin in the woods HERE.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
