Andrés Muschietti’s MAMA may yet to have opened here in the UK (it hits this Friday, our review HERE), but the film’s huge stateside success has Universal Pictures pondering a return for the supernatural guardian. The films’ producer, Guillermo del Toro, spotted Muschietti’s own, terrifying 3-minute short and tapped the filmmaker to make it full-length. Since it’s release in January, MAMA, has went on to gross almost $90 million on a budget of around $15 million.
Unsurprisingly, Universal are now looking at pimping MAMA out in a follow-up, although the studio’s international president, David Kosse, states:
We think there’s potential for a Mama franchise. We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages.
MAMA Stars ZERO DARK THIRTY’s Oscar-nominee, Jessica Chastain, alongside GAME OF THRONES’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, in the story of a couple who are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years after the disappearance and murder of their mother…. but did MAMA, ever really leave them? Of course she bloody didn’t, the title, somewhat, gives that away!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
