Just when you thought director Rupert Wyatt was sitting with a thumb up his backside after vacating DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (click here for more recent news on that project), we now have word he’s now in advanced talks to helm the big-screen adaptation of THE EQUALIZER.

The projet, based on the cult, 1980s action series starring the late, Edward Woodward, was (until recently) due to be directed by DRIVE and BRONSON’s Nicolas Winding-Refn. The acclaimed Danish filmmaker was unable to strike a deal with Sony Pictures. This was most probably because he likes full creative control on his projects, and/or the studio were, in the end, not willing to go to the graphic and violent lengths his films so often do.

Denzel Washington is still attached to take on the role of Robert McCall, a retired intelligence agent offering his services as a ruthless and resourceful vigilante on the streets of New York City. Shooting is scheduled to begin in May for a release expected summer 2014.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
