Jason Clarke To Lead The ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’!

It all looked so bleak for the reinvigorated franchise after Rupert Wyatt dropped out of the sequel to his impressive reboot, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, due to the ever-familiar ‘creative differences’. It appeared even more so following news that James Franco will most likely not be returning either.

Since then, we’ve learned CLOVERFIELD and LET ME IN director Matt Reeves will be the man charged with showing us how chief chimp, Caeser, and primate pals, lead an uprising to take back their role in the world. Also onboard is mo-cap master, Andy Serkis, once again donning the dots as the aforementioned computer-generated simian for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Now we can confirm that the excellent and underrated Jason Clarke, who has had a cracking year with top performances in LAWLESS and Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-nominated drama, ZERO DARK THIRTY, will take the lead in the sci-fi/action sequel, slated for cinemas 23rd May 2014. It’s about time someone saw Clarke’s talent as a leading man, although we’re yet to hear details of his role. However, the film will take place 15 years after the events of RISE, and seeing San Franciscans struggle to survive the monkey madness.

The script has been written by the returning Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, although, since Wyatt’s departure, both Scott Z. Burns (THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM) and Mark Bomback (DIE HARD 4.0) have had a crack at adding/changing/rewriting it. We’ll keep you posted as more casting is sure to follow with shooting expected to commence early summer.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
