After a total of five films to feature Thomas Harris’ flesh-eating fiend, Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic serial-killer is going to make the leap from the silver screen to the small-screen via NBC. Mads Mikklesen has some tough shoes to fill after both Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins gave the character iconic status in the likes of MANHUNTER and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Creator of the forthcoming television series HANNIBAL, Bryan Fuller, has gone back to the early beginning of the whole saga and Harris’ novel RED DRAGON (but not as far back as HANNIBAL RISING), and will depict how FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) became working colleagues and friends with the ‘good doctor’, before discovering his new pal was indeed one of the very men he was trained to hunt.
Check out this early promo look for the first 13 episode season, which will air in the US from the 9th April (and UK date and channel is still to be confirmed). The series co-stars Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas, Lara Jean Chorostecki and Aaron Abrams.
I’ve no doubt NBC will have a hit on their hands, but I somehow feel the network may have missed the boat with a transition to television after the recent success of Kevin Williamson’s similarly-themed, THE FOLLOWING, starring Kevin Bacon.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
