On Tuesday night, photographer and director Rankin and Nokia brought together famous faces and emerging talent from the film industry to premiere films from the first year of Collabor8te, a scheme set up to support aspiring filmmakers at The Regent Street Cinema, the birthplace of British cinema, hosted the event where in 1896 the Lumiere brothers’ new Cinematographe was used to show moving pictures to a paying audience for the very first time.
Rankin’s incredible experience in film led him to recognise the lack of support for new talent in the industry. In 2011, he decided to invest personal funds through Rankin Film Productions partnering with the production company, The Bureau and Dazed & Confused, to launch Collabor8te.
Nokia is sponsoring the second year of Collabor8te and celebrating the success of the first year through the Premiere. The evening showcased 6 films that have been crafted and delivered through the support of industry experts and the Collabor8te scheme with attendees that included Rankin, Vicky McClure, Pixie Lott, Ashley Walters and Robert Sheehan. Rankin had this to say:
“Founded in 2011, Collabor8te creates opportunities for new talent to be discovered and helps those who may not otherwise have the chance to develop their ideas. As we saw last night the standard of films that emerged from year one shows how schemes like these help promising grassroots. Nokia’s involvement has enabled this year’s scheme and I hope their support encourages more people to get involved in the future.”
Nokia is the leading innovator in mobile imaging, from being one of the first to install a camera in a mobile phone (2002, Nokia 7650), to developing the Nokia N8 which was used by directors Hooman Khalili and Pat Giles to shoot the first feature length film on a mobile phone. Annie Kearney from Nokia added:
“Nokia is a global leader in imaging technology and we will continue to deliver innovations that empower budding film and photography enthusiasts to deliver amazing results on the smallest of budgets on stunning devices. It is for this reason that we are so enthusiastic to support a fantastic scheme like Collabor8te that enables real talent in the film world to be uncovered”.
