Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ Hits A Speedbump! Blame ‘Frankenweenie’

Pinocchio Guillermo Del ToroWell don’t just blame FRANKENWEENIE, as it isn’t really that film’s fault. However, a poor worldwide gross of $65 million is currently being blamed for the hiatus that Guillermo Del Toro’s 3D stop-motion animated adaptation is being forced to take.  Del Toro was set to co-direct along with Michael Gustafson, but according to writer Gris Grimly, production has come to a standstill. In a series of tweets (that have since been deleted) Grimly said the following:

Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick.

Before responding to a fans request for a specific reason with:

There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them.

So perhaps not the best time for stop-motion animation, which is a real shame. It’s one of my favourite forms of cinematic art and always has been. Although FRANKENWEENIE wasn’t exactly perfect, it was also very brave by being a kids film and in black and white.
