That’s My Boy And Rock Of Ages Fail To Ignite US Box Office

Neither the Tom Cruise musical ROCK OF AGES, nor the comedic team-up of Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg in THAT’S MY BOY, managed to make an impression on the US box office this weekend, despite the fact they were not up against any huge blockbuster releases. It was sci-fi and superhero free this week – but audiences just weren’t falling for it.

THAT’S MY BOY only just managed to scrape into the top five with $13 million. ROCK OF AGES had to settle at number three with $15.1 million. I’m not surprised that these films weren’t exactly cinematic gold – I haven’t seen either, but the trailers were enough to deter me. Why go and see Catherine Zeta-Jones massacre ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ when I can stay at home and listen to Twisted Sister’s original? I’ll even go one better by getting drunk and hammering out the tune myself down the local pub. As for THAT’S MY BOY, the trailer showing a teacher seducing her pupil isn’t what I would call good comedy material. Let’s imagine the out-roar if the genders were reversed. These two releases were also not well liked by critics, both receiving Rotten scores at Rotten Tomatoes.

With no serious competition, this allowed MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED to top the chart for a second week in a row with $35.5 million this weekend for a total gross so far of $120 million. Viewers in the UK will have to wait a ridiculous four more months to see the latest animated installment, when it’s released in October. You would think Dreamworks would want to capitalise on the European setting and the Euro 2012 football tournament currently going on.

Rounding out the top five were PROMETHEUS at number two with $20.2 million and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN at number four with $13.8 million. THE AVENGERS is still making money with $8.85 million in its seventh week, making its total a whopping $587 million. This puts THE AVENGERS at number three on the All-Time USA Box Office just behind Titanic and Avatar.

Next week will see the release of Pixar’s BRAVE, and the Tim Burton produced ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER.

THAT’s MY BOY stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg and will be released in the UK on 7th September. MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED has the voices of Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith and will be released in the UK on 19th October. ROCK OF AGES, THE AVENGERS, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and PROMETHEUS are all out now. ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER will be released on 20th June and BRAVE will be released on 17th August.
