For a number of years now, cult and horror film festival GrimmFest has seen fans around the country flock to Manchester during the month of October to see some of their genre favourites back on the big-screen, filtered in between a number previews of upcoming efforts. Each year, the festival has gotten bigger with a host of major films and guests descending on the city and vying for their spot in the gore-filled limelight. The event, which THN covered for the first time last year, has been such a success that a ‘spin-off’ series of double-bills are planned for 2013.

These begin on the 23rd January at the Dancehouse Theatre with a special and intense showing of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 macabre masterpiece, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. If that’s not enough for gore-geeks, how about following that directly up with Wes Craven’s vicious retelling of Bergman’s THE VIRGIN SPRING, and THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. Remember, just keep repeating It’s only a movie… It’s only a movie… It’s only a movie!

The 26th January finds a duo of British nail-biting thrillers, namely TOWER BLOCK, starring Sheridan Smith, Jack O’Connell and Russell Tovey, as well as the gothic ‘found-footage’ chiller, HOLLOW. This time screening at the very unique Stockport Plaza.

UPDATE: The above screening will allow those attending to put some questions to prolific TOWER BLOCK screenwriter James Moran before the premiere of his new Brit thriller. He’ll be discussing his work on the film as well as his hit British horror movies SEVERANCE & COCKNEYS VS ZOMBIES. If you’re lucky, he’ll also enlighten you on writing work for TV shows like DR WHO, TORCHWOOD and SPOOKS. Matt Holt, the writer and producer of new Brit horror HOLLOW, will be also be telling us about his efforts journey from successful, award winning, festival screenings through to US and UK distribution. A must for all new and wannabe film makers and genre film fans alike.

The last day of the month sees a bloody, black comedy double of MON AMI, in which two friends put together a ‘get-rich-quick’ plan by kidnapping their boss’s daughter, only for it to fail spectacularly. Appropriately-titled comic horror, CHOP, will follow a man forced to confront his past by a psychotic stranger. Again located at the Stockport Plaza.

THN will keep you up to date for the coming months for more grisly goings-on and you’ll find more details on tickets over at the Grimm Up North website.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
