Following a break for Christmas and New Year THN’s rundown of the weeks home entertainment releases recommences with some bangers:
LAWLESS (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. John Hillcoat
John Hillcoat’s THE ROAD sent Viggo Mortensen into a year-long sabbatical, thankfully his follow up LAWLESS is a much lighter affair, a simple story told with fantastic performances trying to be nothing else.
Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a bootlegging gang is threatened by a new deputy and other authorities who want a cut of their profits.
DREDD (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Pete Travis
The Judge returns (Dredd not Reinhold) with action, chin and more action which will please some, but didn’t satisfy us with poor direction, wafer-thin plotting and a dull premise colliding to make DREDD a dreary experience.
In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
SHADOW DANCER (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. James Marsh
Ever reliable Andrea Riseborough stars in James Marsh’s adaptation of Tom Bradby’s novel which co-stars human breeze block Clive Owen. Not easy going you could find SHADOW DANCER slightly too slow paced in places, but worth a look.
Set in 1990s Belfast, an active member of the IRA becomes an informant for MI5 in order to protect her son’s welfare.
ANGER MANAGEMENT: SEASON ONE (DVD/Blu-ray) – creator Bruce Helford
Tabloid loving filth machine Charlie Sheen takes the lead in ANGER MANAGEMENT a show that will appeal to some, but we found it tired, unfunny and boring.
A guy is sentenced to anger management counseling with an aggressive instructor.
360 (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Fernando Meirelles
CITY OF GOD director Fernando Meirelles returns with a multi-stranded star studded drama looking at love.
A dramatic thriller that weaves together the stories of an array of people from disparate social backgrounds through their intersecting relationships.
That’s your lot for this week, be sure to keep it THN every Monday for all the weeks releases.
Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
