Jeremy Renner Wants More Hawkeye, Also The Sky Is Blue

Jeremy Renner Hawkeye The Avengers

If you’re that one person who didn’t manage to see MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS last year, allow us to fill you in on why Jeremy Renner is, understandably, pretty hacked off about the role his character Hawkeye had to play in proceedings. Of course, if you still want to see the film, look away now.

After a cameo introduction in THOR (2011), the most we saw of Hawkeye in AVENGERS was him playing ninja and lurking in the shadows of a SHIELD base. Two minutes later, in comes big bad Loki to brainwash him for pretty much the rest of the film, ending aside. So basically, any opportunity for Renner to push some character development has been largely non-existent.

Even the only other non-superpowered superhero on the Avengers team, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), had more to do than him, with a starring role in IRON MAN 2 and plenty to get her teeth into in AVENGERS. So of course Renner is slightly peeved. Particularly when, with Marvel’s capacity for output culminating in 2 films a year, it doesn’t look like there’ll be any room for a solo Hawkeye flick any time soon.

The actor chatted with MTV recently about his role in THE AVENGERS 2 (working title), confirming his return and pondering whether he’ll ever get a chance to play the guy he wanted to play in the first place. (Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration.)

‘It’s what he was able to do with the first one. Now, there’s more opportunities to explore the characters a little more, I think, for everybody. I think that’s exciting.’

Renner was quick to point out that he isn’t trying to make demands of Joss Whedon, writer and director of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, jokingly claiming he’d ‘screw things all up’ anyway. But the upcoming sequel isn’t all fairytales and happy endings, as the BOURNE LEGACY and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE actor points out, which could open the door for Hawkeye to come into his own: in the comics, he was prone to clashing with other members of the group. Renner says we might see something like this in the sequel:

‘The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.’

But still, with fan favourites Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor already potentially returning for THE AVENGERS 2, plus the likes of Ant Man and whoever else Marvel try to cram into one film, will there be any room for Hawkeye after all? We’ll find out on 1st May, 2015.

Do you want to see more of Hawkeye or should his character be put aside to make way for the big boys? Let us know in the comments below.
