Director Mark Romanek has departed Disney’s live-action re-imamgining of fairytale CINDERELLA, citing the ever-familar ‘creative differences’. The family fantasy has Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett attached to play the ‘belle of the ball’s wicked stepmother but it appears Romanek’s vision is little too dark for House of Mouse head-honchos.
Romanek, who’s directed superb foreboding features ONE HOUR PHOTO and NEVER LET ME GO, is no stranger to leaving projects if things are not going in his direction or favour. He (in)famously left the Benicio Del Toro-led horror remake, THE WOLFMAN, only days before shooting was due to begin. Joe Johnson was drafted in as a replacement at the eleventh hour.
Thankfully for Disney, the film is still months away from pre-production with no other casting in place leaving them plenty of time to fill the void. No word yet if Blanchett is willing to stay and work with another filmmaker.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
