Walter Salles’ ON THE ROAD received a mixed reception, especially from lovers of the novel, and now Jack Kerouac’s 1962 novel BIG SUR has been the influence for writer and director Michael Polish, a man who hasn’t had the best film success but is married to Kate Bosworth so, you know, he’s on the right track!
Independent film heroes Sundance Film Festival 2013 has the honour of screening this one first, with Jean-Marc Barr playing Jack Kerouac (who, in the book, is called Jack Duluoz and a fictional version of Kerouac), together with the aforementioned Kate Bosworth and Josh Lucas also starring. This story is about the writer’s struggle with alcoholism and a relationship with his best friend’s mistress after the success of On The Road.
The trailer looks visually stunning, and a very intriguing exploration into that side of Kerouac with a performance from Barr that seems to reflect a mix of Kevin Spacey and a MAD MEN-style Jon Hamm. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one:
