Coming after yesterdays tie for number five, we’ve got a solitary release at number four in our countdown:
THE CABIN IN THE WOOD – dir. Drew Goddard starring Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS gave the saturated horror genre a welcome boost on its April release. Filmed in 2009, Drew Goddard and co-writer Joss Whedon’s bonkers tale wowed audiences with its audacity and originality, shoving the found footage, hidden camera and stalk-and-slash genre’s into the shade.
Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.
Reviewer and News Co-ordinator Luke couldn’t hide his enthusiasm:
An incredibly fun slice of cinematic excellence. It perfectly subverts many genre conventions and in a way changes the way in which you will view every clichéd horror film from now on. Not only that, but it delivers on every promise it makes for a wild finale.
Whilst Joe Taylor, Reviewer, Features and News, compared it to another game-changer:
Scary, original, mega geeky, and excellent subversion of the horror genre make it this generation’s Scream.
And Features Editor Martin McDonagh felt it perfectly captured the horror fans feelings towards the state of the genre:
A humorous and important critique of Hollywood’s savage raping of the horror genre. Long overdue, but worth the wait.

Applying equilibrium are two of the dullest releases of the year:
TAKEN 2 – dir. Olivier Megaton starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace
News Editor Dan enjoyed the first instalment, but the second?
TAKEN 2 is slow, confused and all a bit pointless so my final thought? Just watch TAKEN, twice.
THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY – dir. Mabrouk El Mechri starring Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver
MAN OF STEEL Henry Cavill didn’t impress Joe Taylor, and almost brought upon euthanasia:
THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY made me feel like I was going to die from boredom
Keep it THN tomorrow and for the rest of the week as we continue our countdown of 2012’s best – and worst.
Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
