Dennis Haysbert Comments On Replacing Michael Clarke Duncan In ‘Sin City’ Sequel

Dennis Haysbert Manute Sin City

The exciting prospect of a sequel to 2005’s SIN CITY took a big hit with the tragic news that Michael Clarke Duncan had passed away earlier this year. His character, Manute, might not have had the biggest part in the first film, but he was set to be a prominent feature of the sequel, SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Recently we learned that it will be Dennis Haysbert (24, HEAT) that will take over the role and now he’s been out giving his thoughts on taking over from Duncan and how Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller works together on set.

I haven’t finished working out to the capacity that I need to, but he’s going to be different. This is playing as a prequel, so it should work out, it’s going to be my character, but I’ve spoken extensively with Frank Miller and Robert (Rodriguez) about what they want with the character and yes, it has to have some feel of what Michael did but I have to make it my own.

I think it seems to be the right approach to doing this. Of course they need to be mindful that he’s playing a character that has been portrayed in the series before, but it shouldn’t be an imitation either. Reports mentions that Haysbert has shaved his head and bulked up quite a bit to match Michael Clarke Duncan a little more physically, and I think that this could end up working quite well. Haybert also had the following to say about Rodriguez and Miller:

Robert sets up the camera and he does a lot of the hands-on directing but Frank is very astute and very good at watching from a distance and just coming in and popping in a few things in your ear that really solidifies it. Because he comes from that comic book approach and everything is storyboarded so you have a clear idea as to what you want to do and what he wants. It’s a very cool process.

If they can work their magic on this one as they did on the first it should be a fantastic experience. As a big fan of the original, I’m looking forward to this sequel. I’m just slightly worried that it has been too long and that few people will care about it when it does come out, but we will just have to wait and see.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It will star Jessica Alba, Jamie Chung, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke & Dennis Haysbert. It is scheduled to arrive in US cinemas on 4th October 2013 and in UK cinemas around that time.
