Every now and again comes a trailer that simply entrances you. You have to have that film there are then, and you’d even scratch away at your computer monitor in a feeble attempt to possess something of the film itself. That’s how I felt after seeing the trailer to the Jet Li fantasy THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE. Luckily this feature was released in the UK earlier this year as EMPEROR AND THE WHITE SNAKE and I can order my copy right now. The trailer speaks simply of a plot involving a man falling in love with a white snake disguised as a woman. Jet Li plays the sorcerer who must do battle to save the man’s soul but destroy his happiness. The film is selling itself completely on the visuals of inventive creatures and scenes reminiscent of other Asia set fantasies such as NINJA SCROLL. This may be a bad sign in terms of plot, character and dialogue, but so far I’m hooked.
THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE is to be released via VOD in the US on 3rd January 2013. It stars Jet Li, Raymond Lam, Shengyi Huang, Charlene Choi, and Zhang Wen. It’s available in the UK right now.
