The man behind Nirvana’s sticks, Foo Fighters front man and all round good rock-egg Dave Grohl is unleashing his documentary about legendary Sound City Records upon the world, and it is hitting Sundance Film Festival 2013 first of all, as we have seen in the elusive ‘Premieres’ list featured on THN last week.
The iconic California studio, known to have produced some of the finest rock albums heard both sides of the Atlantic (Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash, Rage Against The Machine, Metallica to name but a few recorded artists), has the film focus on its signature analog techniques of mixing records; seldom heard in this modern era of heightened digitalised production. Grohl devised the premise after buying the infamous Neve 8028 soundboard from the studio last year.
Featuring recorded live performances as well as interviews from the bands and hearts behind the tech, this rare glimpse into the inside of the rock music machine will have any heavy metal fan headbanging like they were listening to ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ for the first time. SOUND CITY will premiere at Sundance in January before hitting US cinemas in February. No UK release date yet.
