Three weeks to go until Christmas and one of the years biggest films lands on DVD and Blu-ray. But enough about NEW YEAR’S EVE let’s get to it.
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Christopher Nolan
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 18 months Christopher Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY came to an end this summer in spectacular fashion. Living up to the hype wonderfully well the complex, epic story satisfied filmgoers round the world and we described it as “a masterpiece for the ages”.
Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.
THE BOURNE LEGACY (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Tony Gilroy
The fourth in the franchises see’s Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass depart and Tony Gilroy and Jeremy Renner step in. Action packed but not entirely satisfying it is “Enjoyable… but without the staying power of the previous three”.
An expansion of the universe from Robert Ludlum’s novels, centered on a new hero whose stakes have been triggered by the events of the previous three films.
LUCK: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (DVD/Blu-ray) – creator David Milch
DEADWOOD creator David Milch returns with LUCK. Based around a Sacramento racetrack it stars Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Jason Gedrick, Nick Nolte, Richard Kind, Kerry Condon amongst others with Michael Mann executive producing. Our man Craig likened it to Milch’s previous work with “the rich characters with complex back-stories ensure the series remains gripping”.
A TV series centered around characters who are tied to the same horse-racing track.
NEW YEARS EVE (DVD/Blu) – dir. Garry Marshall
Met with the kind of vitriol normally reserved for serial killers Garry Marshall’s follow up to VALENTINES DAY may not make it onto many Christmas lists, especially reviewer John who described it as like “being beaten to death by a jelly baby holding a block of marzipan“.
The lives of several couples and singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year’s Eve.
Happy watching and we’ll be back next week with the biggest releases.
Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
