‘Sympathy For Lady Vengeance’ Remake

We’ve been touting a Korean invasion over the past few months here at THN, and here is some more news to cement that fact. Charlize Theron is set to produce and star in a remake of Park Chan Wook’s SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. The film will see Theron playing a woman who has served 13 years for killing a young boy. During that time she has schemed her revenge against the real killer, the boy’s teacher. The original was part of Park’s Vengeance Trilogy, which included a film that is currently being remade by Spike Lee, OLDBOY.

William Monahan is set to write the screenplay, which is a good sign as he adapted another Asian classic, INFERNAL AFFAIRS, into the brilliant THE DEPARTED. Speaking about adapting the project, Monahan said:

This will be very American – and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.

I’m sure he’ll rise to the challenge, and the story is something that can be adapted in an interesting way in order to capture American sensibilities. Annapurna Pictures are on board to produce along with Theron. I’m sure it wont be long before we hear about a proposed remake for SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE, which is my favourite of the entire trilogy.

Not only are we seeing remakes of these Korean classics, but three of Korea’s top directors are making English language debuts next year. Park Chan Wook is directing STOKER, Kim Jee Woon takes on THE LAST STAND, and Bong Joon Ho will adapt SNOWPIERCER. You can follow our series on their previous work here.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
