She’ll soon be reprising her role of Galadriel in LORD OF THE RINGS prequel THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and now it appears that Cate Blanchett has her heart set on another iconic tale. The Oscar-winner is set to star in director Mark Romanek’s live-action Disney production CINDERELLA, in which she will take the role of the wicked stepmother who’ll torment our beautiful heroine before she becomes the belle of the ball.
Romanek’s last big-screen effort was the devastatingly heartbreaking NEVER LET ME GO but has recently been rumoured to helm Dan Brown’s THE LOST SYMBOL, with Tom Hanks expected back as cryptic-clue hunter Robert Langdon. There is no word yet if he will take over from Ron Howard for that follow-up but I suspect he’s going to be pretty busy with Disney’s live-action fairytale. We’ll keep you posting on other potential casting.
Disney also have another of their iconic animated classics currently in a live-action production with SLEEPING BEAUTY, as told from the perspective of the villain. MALEFICENT is almost complete with Angelina Jolie headlining that particular feature, written specifically with her in mind. Visual-effects maestro Robert Stromberg makes his directorial debut.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
