Following a record breaking Thanksgiving weekend – we hope you all had a great holiday – the good stuff doesn’t stop with another batch of home entertainment releases.
Director John Hillcoat re-teams with THE PROPOSITION writer Nick Cave (him of the bad seeds) and star Guy Ritchie, but this time he’s brought some friends: Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, and Jason Clarke to tell the story of the Bondurant Brothers (Hardy, Clarke and LaBeouf) who flouted the prohibition and chased the dream in 1920s America. We loved it stating it “is the most full-on fun you could have with a Western“, and you can’t say fairer than that.
Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a bootlegging gang is threatened by a new deputy and other authorities who want a cut of their profits.
Coming from the opposite end of the movie spectrum is PARANORMAN. The children’s horror features Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) a child who can see ghosts, as he tries to save his town. Our man Matt wasn’t sold on it’s fear-inducing credentials “It’ll entertain the kid, that’s for sure. Whether it will scare the pants off them is another matter entirely” but it will fill an hour and a half nicely.
A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.
For the TV buffs how about some controversy? Well you’re in LUCK, quite literally as the fortunately monikered, but now put down series lands on DVD and Blu-ray. From producer Michael Mann and starring Dustin Hoffman it was set to win big. Sadly, the horse department didn’t get the memo and following a couple of accidents resulting in equine deaths, the show was cancelled. So get to your local bookmakers, sorry entertainment shop, and pick up a copy before it gallops away.
A TV series centered around characters who are tied to the same horse-racing track.
That’s it for the featured releases but keep your eyes peeled for the following: STEP UP REVOLUTION, THE DAY, THE APPARITION, and STASH HOUSE.
We’ll be back next week with more new releases.
Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
