Homeland Season 2 Blog: Episode 2.8 I’ll Fly Away •SPOILERS•

Director: Michael Cuesta

Writer: Howard Gordon, Chip Johannessen

Breakdown: Dana, struggling to come to terms with the hit and run, escapes the Brody family home to Mike’s. Here she stays and with Mike in tow, attempts to apologise to the deceased’s daughter instead learning her intentions are more focused on the insurance payout than justice for her mother. During an emotional phone call home Dana informs Jess that the reason Brody stopped her reporting the incident to the Police was Carrie.

Brody hits breaking point as he and Jess butt heads over his work with the CIA. Following a huge row he meets Roya Hammad and angrily informs her he is out and has had enough. Sensing his withdrawal Carrie takes him off grid to a safe house where they ‘reacquaint’ whilst under hidden surveillance – audio only, they aren’t perverts. The following morning Brody calls, and apologises to Roya and arranges another meet in a parking lot. Upon meeting, Roya orders Brody to drive until told to stop. Many miles later – tailed by Carrie, Virgil, and Max – they pull over and he is introduced to the unidentified man who bundles him into a helicopter the CIA can’t track.

Dana is back home at the Brody’s and informs Jess of her experience with the daughter. Hugely upset Dana tells her Walden et al paid the daughter off, and how she feels like a murderer. Episode ends with Brody, held up by two men, reintroduced to a clean cut Abu Nazir.

Opinion On Episode: Tough to get into it might be, but by the climax 2.8 is edge of your seat stuff. Dana (Morgan Saylor) steals the episode with raw emotion; Carrie and Brody’s relationship is bordering on ridiculous – how many times they will get back together intimately is anyones guess, but it is awfully tiresome; Quinn continues to be the alpha male in the CIA, trying to control Carrie and even Saul his temperament and penchant for shouting profanity ensure he remains a caricature instead of a genuine character. The end is strong and leads to many questions.

What Will Happen Next? The crumbling relationship between Roya and Brody put him at great risk, as do his dalliances with Carrie. Feeling is that Nazir will punish him for his disobedience and remind Brody why he is doing the work for them, Isa. Appealing to the parent inside, Brody will continue to work with Nazir and the unidentified man will become his right hand man. Dana will continue to be torn up by her guilt eventually leading to her going to the Police and ruining the Presidential campaign. Mike and Jess will continue to become close again leading to another affair.

Rating: 3/5 The first 30 minutes are a 2 but the last 15 are a 4 out of 5. There are flashes of brilliance creeping back into the last two episodes however the consistency is gone.

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
