THN’s UK DVD & Blu-Ray Release Column – 19th November 2012

The weekend is over (boo), but that means it’s new DVD and Blu-ray release Monday (yay).

RED DWARF X (DVD) – dir. Doug Naylor

Returning for a tenth season – after the disastrous BACK TO EARTH – Rimmer et al. conjure up a series that our man Tom feels is “the funniest RED DWARF has been in a long time”.

The adventures of the last human being alive and his friends, stranded three million years into deep space on the mining ship Red Dwarf.

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Sarah Smith, Barry Cook

Aardman’s satisfying first forray into CGI  is padded out with the usual leviathan of celebrity voices: James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, and Hugh Laurie, all ensuring this festive tale keep us laughing.

On Christmas night at the North Pole, Santa’s youngest son looks to use his father’s high-tech operation for an urgent mission.

BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* (DVD) – dir. Frederik Gertten

This weeks documentary release is the acclaimed BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS. Our reviewer Kate describes it as “a bit of a ‘David and Goliath’ type thing”. No pebbles being thrown here though, just a big company throwing their weight around.

Dole Food Company wages a campaign to prevent a pair of Swedish filmmakers from showing their documentary about a lawsuit against the company.

FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR (Blu-ray) – dir. Randal Kleiser

Making it’s HD debut, FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR may not measure up in terms of picture or sound quality but it’s “still fun for kids”.

In 1978, a boy is moved 8 years into the future and has an adventure with the alien ship that is responsible for that.

Also released this week is classic CITIZEN KANE (Blu-ray), alongside Frankie Boyle’s latest ‘effort’ THE LAST DAYS OF SODOM. This week there is something for everyone, but the next couple of weeks have got some crackers so keep it THN.

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
