Certainly one of the horror highlights we’ve seen this year has been The Soska Sisters’ uniquely fucked-up thriller AMERICAN MARY, which some of us were lucky enough to catch on the UK festival genre circuit at the likes of FrightFest and GrimmFest (catch our review here).
The gory story follows the beautiful Katharine Isabelle’s passionate medical student Mary Mason, whose struggles to follow her dream in becoming a skilled surgeon, lead her a harrowing journey of self discovery – of which there’s no going back.
The performances, direction and writing are outstanding and there are few that beat Jen and Sylvia Soska’s film for an incomparable plot that combines charm, sweetness, shocks with a genuine freakiness. Not to mention bucket-loads of blood. Take it from us it’s one not to be missed – if you’re able to stomach it! Sadly, there are no confirmed US release dates available as-yet, but expect the film early next year. UK fans can pick it up on DVD/Blu-ray from 21st January 2013.
In the meantime check out this stunning new poster of our twisted heroine, tools in hand!
AMERICAN MARY co-stars Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren and Paula Lindberg.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
