While the sub-genre of the rape/revenge thriller has many similar, hard-to-stomach traits, very few leave a lasting impression. Most of the 1970 and 80s efforts were more exploitative, aiming for shocks rather than to make a statement on human nature and the lengths men would go to for sexual gratification before the inevitable tables are turned. Of course a few broke the mould and dared to pose questions of just how far a person could be pushed to make someone pay, which made for some genuine classic efforts (Abel Ferrara’s MS.45 and Peckinpah’s STRAW DOGS spring to mind).
The latest to follow in these footsteps is Michael Ojeda’s SAVAGED. The film depicts the horrific assault of a deaf mute girl named Zoe, left for dead by a gang of hillbillies after having their ferocious ‘fun’. On the brink of death and found by a native American, he summons the help of an ancient spirit in an attempt to save her life. Unfortunately, Zoe is too far gone but this spirit is not willing to rest, so angry it inhabits her undead corpse and descends on a mission to kill each of her tormentors.
Whether the film brings anything refreshing to the genre remains to be seen but the supernatural element to the story at least gives it an edge above others. Check out the teaser trailer for the shocker expected next year.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
