Andrew Garfield Discusses ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN may have had mixed reactions from both critics and fans alike, but it’s $752 Million worldwide haul made it certain that a sequel would be made as fast as possible. With a 2014 release, the shooting is expected to commence early next year and now Andrew Garfield has chimed in on his thoughts regarding the sequel.

I feel really excited, I feel like we got over a hump with our first one. We had to reinstate the character, and we had to reinvigorate an audience to the character. And I hope to bring more of this theme—the theme of the orphan. I wanna keep exploring that theme of being fatherless, being motherless, searching for purpose and finding a purpose within himself, being a self-made man, I guess.

It is a responsibility to play that role, and I don’t take it lightly, I think there’s so much to explore with that mythology and within the tension between living a double life, struggling with being good, struggling with choosing good behavior over bad behavior, with the pressures of a city on your shoulders.

I think that Garfield did a great job in the first one and I do believe that he’s a huge fan of the character. While I liked the first film more than a lot of other people, I do think that it was hurt by what seems to have been huge changes made in the editing room. I think there’s a lot to explore in the sequel and hopefully it’ll manage to divert more from the Sam Raimi trilogy than the first one did. Emma Stone is set to reprise her role as Gwen Stacy while Shailene Woodley and Jamie Foxx are circling roles as well (rumoured to be Mary Jane and Electro respectively).

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is directed by Marc Webb. It stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. It is scheduled to arrive in UK cinemas on 18th April 2014 and in US cinemas on 2nd May 2014.
