US DVD & Blu-Ray – New Release Tuesday

Home entertainment Tuesday is upon us once again, and we’ve got some good stuff for you:

Pixar’s biggest risk  BRAVE is released giving everyone the chance to revisit the polarising tale of a Scottish girl going against the grain and trying to forge her own path. Available as a three-disc and a rather excessive five-disc set we think BRAVE is well worth another trip to the highlands.

Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Getting the same anniversary package as the UK, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA gets the chance to enchant a new generation. David Lean’s masterpiece is mammoth at over 200 minutes, but is worth every sun-drenched second.

Epic rumination on a flamboyant and controversial British military figure and his conflicted loyalties during wartime service.

Grossly under-rated on release SAVAGES slams onto Blu-ray and DVD looking for fun – something lost on most reviewers. Featuring a bewilderingly psychotic performance from Benicio Del Toro Oliver Stone’s film is as far from PLATOON and JFK as possible but we loved it.

Pot growers Ben and Chon face off against the Mexican drug cartel who kidnapped their shared girlfriend.

After a truly hideous showing at the box office THE WATCH aims to recoup some credibility in your home with a Cruder, Ruder, and Lewder cut. We’re not convinced it fulfilled it’s promise but it will undoubtedly appeal to some.

our men who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion.

Rounding off this weeks releases is arguably Spielberg’s finest 152 minutes EMPIRE OF THE SUN. How convinced we are of this is questionable given the rather exact criteria needed – he hasn’t made another film 152 minutes in length. It is bloody good though and will knock your socks off on Blu-ray.

A young English boy struggles to survive under Japanese occupation during World War II.

Of course this isn’t everything you can also pick up FRIENDS: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION on Blu-ray for the first time, DOCTOR WHO: SERIES SEVEN PART ONE, COMPANY by Stephen Sondheim, and Sundance favourite THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES.

We’ll be back next week with more to quench your home entertainment thirst.

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
