You’re never too old, or so they say, just look at Liam Neeson. Now Sean Penn reportedly wants to expand his talents into the realms of action espionage films. THE PRONE GUNMAN, based on a book by French author Jean-Patrick Manchette, sees a hired killer betrayed by his own organistion; when does that ever happen? The hunted soon becomes the hunter as the film will take us across Europe. With spies still raging in popularity after all these years it seems as though this could be a new franchise starter. However, this wouldn’t be your average bullets and bodies tale, as author Manchette was known for exploring deeper concerns of the human condition, as well as getting rather violent.
The film is being fully funded by StudioCanal with a script from Peter Travis. I guess I’m kind of interested to see Penn in an action role, and like that actors are now getting older at a much slower pace. He’ll certainly be able to add a gritty, worldly feel to his character. But I just can’t see Penn committing to a franchise.
