Your Sister’s Sister DVD Review

Director: Lynn Shelton

Starring: Emily Blunt, Mark Duplass, Rosemarie DeWitt

Running time: 90 minutes

Certificate: 15

Extras: Director’s Commentary, Trailer

Having never seen anything from Lynn Shelton or mumble-core original Mark Duplass, I wasn’t sure what I was letting myself into. And the first question which comes to mind when watching YOUR SISTER’S SISTER is a strange one: what would you do if your best friend slept with your sister? This film delves into the mechanics of that rather uncomfortable situation and Blunt, DeWitt and Duplass deal with it impeccably.

After a year of grieving for his brother, Jack’s (Duplass) best friend, Iris (Blunt) sends him away for a self-reflection vacation at her father’s forest lodge. On his arrival, Jack unexpectedly meets Iris’ sister Hannah (DeWitt) and after a lot of alcohol, they end up in bed together. However, things become awkward when Iris arrives the next day to keep Jack company…

Shelton delivers a heart-warming, truthful narrative acted out through believable, likeable actors. Considering most of the dialogue is improvised, it’s not static or monotonous (but rather heavy on profanity), making sure the action carries well. Having only three characters on screen for 99% of film time, you would be mistaken to think they become dull or outstay their welcome. It’s much rather the opposite, as you become involved in their difficult situation, which becomes even more tricky after Hannah tells the truth. Make sure you catch the ending – you’ll be surprised by your own reaction, as it’s (secretly) exactly how you’d want it to end. Duplass, Blunt and DeWitt are all superb and it’s a shame YOUR SISTER’S SISTER wasn’t given more publicity at the time of its original cinematic release.

Sadly, the DVD doesn’t come with much more than a directors commentary and the trailer. However, the film alone is worth the money; a funny and honest portrayal of what happens when things become complicated and when the truth is revealed.

Your Sister’s Sister is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray now.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.

Before I read this review I’d never heard of this film but I watched a trailer for it and I find the story believable, the characters likeable, and charming overall. I added this film to my Blockbuster @ Home movie queue which is available through DISH. The movie conveniently gets shipped by mail and it should be here in a day or two. This movie should fit nicely into movie Sunday with my sister. The one thing I like about your review is that you point out that the characters never get old and stale which is a huge challenge given that they are at a cabin in the woods. My DISH co-worker says that she may consider watching the movie as well to which I just extended her an invitation to join us. This movie should be great and I’m really looking forward to it.
