The Year We Went Animental: 21 Films Submitted For The Academy Awards

There wasn’t room to swing the decaying corpse of a cat, or any animal for that matter, among all the animated films we have been subjected to over the last 12 months. Every studio has come out in full force and now 21 films, that’s one more than twenty, have been submitted for Best Animated Feature Oscar consideration. It appears that any animated film has been thrust forward regardless of quality, which is a shame as it kind of undermines the category. DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX is one of the worst animated films I’ve ever seen, and there was certainly nothing special about ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT or even Pixar’s BRAVE. I’d place money on picks such as Studio Ghibli’s FROM UP ON POPPY HILL and the autobiographical A LIARS’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY: THE UNTRUE STORY OF MONTY PYTHON’S GRAHAM CHAPMAN.

Here’s the full list of films submitted.

  • ADVENTURES OF ZAMBEZIA
  • BRAVE
  • DELHI SAFARI
  • DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX
  • FRANKENWEENIE
  • FROM UP ON POPPY HILL
  • HEY KRISHNA
  • HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA
  • ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT
  • A LIAR’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY: THE UNTRUE STORY OF MONTY PYTHON’S GRAHAM CHAPMAN
  • MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED
  • THE MYSTICAL LAWS
  • THE PAINTING
  • PARANORMAN
  • THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS
  • THE RABBI’S CAT
  • RISE OF THE GUARDIANS
  • SECRET OF THE WINGS
  • WALTER & TANDOORI’S CHRISTMAS
  • WRECK-IT RALPH
  • ZAFARA

The 85th annual Academy Awards nominations will be announced Thursday, 10th January 2013.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
