Everyone’s favourite Glaswegian thesp Gerard Butler is all set to play Yorkshire born magician extraordinaire Dynamo in a film about his life. Really? No, not really; we can only dream, but Butler is set to star in a film called DYNAMO, based on Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kiev, a novel written by Andy Dougan.
The film is based on the rather more serious subject of a football game that took place between an occupied Ukrainian soccer team and their Nazi captors during World War II. Butler will play a character named Nikolai Trusevich, the goalkeeper and leader of the Ukrainian team. Deadline says that Trusevich ‘served as a cornerstone and leader for his team, and ultimately inspired the entire battered city of Kiev, Ukraine. To stem a rising tide of resistance and establish Aryan superiority, the Nazi’s set up a match pitting the starving Ukrainians against a ‘super team’ of German players that to this day is still known as “The Death Match”.’ Eli Richbourg adapted the novel.
Shooting kicks off in Europe in 2013.
