Doctor Who/Sherlock Crossover? Matt Smith Wouldn’t Mind…

While fielding questions from journalists at the London Comic Con last weekend, DOCTOR WHO star Matt Smith expressed an interest in the idea of a crossover with the equally popular BBC series, SHERLOCK. Although he believed it was unlikely to ever come to fruition, Smith agreed that, if nothing else, it would be kind of cool:

“I’m not averse to it,” he said. “I’m kind of open… because I just think they would find each other remarkable.”

I’m not going to lie: The idea of The Doctor and Sherlock sharing the same universe, however briefly, is an intriguing thought. For anyone who shares a love for both series, the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch’s cold and socially awkward Sherlock carrying on a conversation with Smith’s eccentric time traveller would be a TV fantasy meeting come true.

But would it, could it, ever work? The obvious answer would be no. Despite sharing the same creative team (hello Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss!), the series’ are vastly different from one another. The real reason why any fan would ever consider actually having the two shows collide is simple — we all just want to see Smith and Cumberbatch share a scene together.

But, when all is said and done, the main issue would be that The Doctor, who often joins forces with famous historical figures to save the world, would never be able to meet Sherlock — a fictional literary character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. No amount of great writing would be able to do it justice so, as appealing as it may sound, it’s better left well enough alone.

So, for all those Whovians and Sherlockians out there daydreaming about a chance encounter between their two favourite television characters, just remember: Bow ties are cool. But a forced meeting between The Doctor and Sherlock that is written just to appease hardcore fans is not.
