Wener Herzog To Direct Adaptation Of Booker Prize Winner ‘Vernon God Little’

German director Werner Herzog is set to oversee the film adaptation of VERNON GOD LITTLE, based on the Man Booker Prize winner by DBC Pierre. Herzog made the official announcement yesterday while at an event in Berlin.

Set in Texas, VERNON GOD LITTLE is a coming-of-age story told from the perspective of a young teenage boy whose best friend goes on a high school shooting rampage. The script, penned by Andrew Birkin, is already in the works. The novel courted controversy around the time of its initial 2003 release with claims that it was anti-American and relied heavily on offensive Texan stereotypes. There is no word yet on casting or whether or not Pierre, an Australian author who was raised in Mexico, will be involved in the project.

The film marks Herzog’s return to fictional narratives, his last foray being the 2009 drama MY SON, MY SON, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? starring Michael Shannon and Willem Dafoe. In recent years, Herzog has earned critical praise and audience raves for his documentaries CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS (2010), INTO THE ABYSS (2011) and this year’s ON DEATH ROW.
