With the first few trailers for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming DJANGO UNCHAINED, you may be forgiven for expecting a blaxploitation western that’s all funk and little soul. Considering the film deals with slavery that could be a pretty risky way to approach the material. Which is probably why star Jamie Foxx has decided to give some comments on how the film represents slavery on celluloid:
This is the truest depiction of slavery, in terms of how tough and brutal it was. When you see the movie you’ll automatically go back to the time and the way slaves were treated. It’s really going to make people look at the time in a different way. The only thing Django really wants to do is love his woman, and that’s what makes our story different than any old slavery movie. We deal with the political, but he’s not trying to cure slavery.
Sounds like Tarantino is using a more personal story to address a larger problem, whilst having a lot of fun along the way. I was disappointed with INGLOURIOUS BASTARDS and how all over the place it was, but I have a good feeling about DJANGO UNCHAINED.
DJANGO UNCHAINED is released 18th January 2013. It stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo Dicaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Jonah Hill, Kerry Washington, Amber Tamblyn, Don Johnson, and James Remar.
