One of the year’s best films has to be CHRONICLE, the found footage film that details the journey of three high school boys that gain super powers. A sequel was rumoured very soon after release, but it seems as though there has been a slight hiccup. John Landis, director of THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980), AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981) and father to CHORNICLE writer Max Landis has dropped a big hint as to why news has hushed up on the CHRONICLE 2 front:
[Max] wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want CHRONICLE again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution,’ and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.
Fox obviously have selfish dollar signs in their eyes, and don’t realise that we as an audience want original and challenging cinema. I don’t want to see the same thing again, with different kids getting different powers or whatever. I want a continuation of the story, but in a non-traditional superhero way. I hope Max Landis is able to stick to his guns and isn’t forced out or made to compromise. Director of CHRONICLE, Josh Trank, is supposed to be taking on a reboot of THE FANTASTIC FOUR, so is that another film they want ‘more of the same’ from?
