While we recently brought you news that Liam Neeson thought a third TAKEN action-adventure was a ridiculously bad idea, we can now confirm plans for TAKEN 3 are beginning to take shape. Whether Neeson knows that remains to be seen but the strong $50 million-plus box-office opening for TAKEN 2 this weekend in the US alone (double that of the franchise opener), has 20th Century Fox rubbing their hands at the prospect.
Neeson strikes me as a man and an actor who keeps his word and I don’t think he’ll agree unless the story is original and more than just a retread of what we’ve already seen, no matter how and enjoyable and preposterously over-the-top the previous entries have been. He’ll also want a huge pay hike if he’s going to be cracking more skulls in more European locations as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills.
Co-creator and producer Robert Mark Kamen, who has already today given details of the supposed remake of Van Damme’s BLOODSPORT, gave this frank update on the possibility of another TAKEN effort.
We didn’t start talking about [it] until we saw the numbers. But then we said, ‘Oh, okay. I think we should do a third one.’ And Fox wants us to do a third one. We’ve taken everyone we can take, so it’s going to go in another direction.
So just for the money then. At least they’re honest.
TAKEN 2 is currently in cinemas and co-stars Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser, Luke Grimes and Rade Serbedzija. Read our review HERE
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
