We recently heard a remake of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s martial-arts craptastic video classic BLOODSPORT was picked up for production and while promoting THE EXPENDABLES 2, Van Damme expressed an interest in taking the role of the mentor/trainer who set his previous character Frank Dux, on his bone-snapping journey. Well, it now appears he wont be included because this BLOODSPORT will not be a remake and will only bare the title of the 1988 film.
Mark Robert Kamen, regular writing and producing collaborator alongside Luc Besson on hit action franchise money-spinners TAKEN and THE TRANSPORTER, is one of those behind the film. He had this to say about the film and it’s potential link to the ass-kicking tournament title.
This film resembles the original in title only. It has nothing to do with any Kumite contest. It has nothing to do with Frank Dux. If the title was not the same, you would not associate the two films. To use JCVD would make no sense because the association would be lost as the story has nothing to do with the first one. If anything it would be a distraction.
BLOODSPORT is currently in pre-production and expected 2014. SALT and PATRIOT GAMES’ Phillip Noyce is expected to direct but Kamen’s quote is effectively a ‘f**k you Jean-Claude’.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
