Universal Pictures are about to let Len Wiseman loose on their reboot of blockbuster franchise THE MUMMY. The UNDERWORLD director has already f**ked-up one beloved classic this year, with his TOTAL RECALL remake being pretty much ‘total shite’ (wasting an awesome cast) and now is confirmed to be having a go with another box-office hit.
While the original Boris Karloff masterpiece of 1932 was given an adventurous overhaul in Stephen Sommers bloated Indiana Jones rip-off, I’m less perturbed about him handling THE MUMMY. I have no love whatsoever for Sommers FX heavy hit franchise opener of 1999 and even less for the dire sequel and spin-offs. Only a director like Sommers can make you want to switch off while the lovely Rachel Weisz is on screen and now Wiseman appears to be his natural successor.
What do you think about Len Wiseman taking on THE MUMMY? Here’s what the husband of the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale (his greatest achievement in my opinion) had to say about the announcement:
When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different Mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.
‘A darker twist’ my arse. Expect lots of big guns, beautiful girls and the end product to be spectacular crap. PROMETHEUS co-writer Jon Spaihts will pen the screenplay for a release expected for summer 2014/15.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

It’s weird but that shot of Wiseman already makes him look like he’s done something wrong…
