Could ‘Planet Hulk’ Be On Its Way? Kevin Feige Drops A Ton Of Hulk Information

Hulk certainly did smash in this year’s THE AVENGERS. After years of struggling with solo films (though I loved them both) it seemed as though audiences finally warmed to the not-so-jolly green giant. Whedon and Ruffalo certainly worked hard to bring us a Hulk that was more fun as both the Hulk and Bruce Banner. Now Marvel executive Kevin Feige, who gave us some Thanos information yesterday, has given us some information on the future solo films of Hulk and when we’ll see him again in a talk with MTV. Here’s what Feige had to say about potential plot lines:

I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. Planet Hulk is a cool story. World War Hulk is a cool story.  I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself.  It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.

Planet Hulk is the epic story where Hulk is no longer able to be contained on Earth and so he is blasted into space where he lands on a planet and is forced to fight in an intergalactic arena. The story was already adapted as one of Marvel’s animated features and was generally successful. World War Hulk saw Hulk return to Earth and by this time he wasn’t too happy as you can imagine.

But don’t get too excited just yet. Feige also commented that we wont see a Hulk solo film until after THE AVENGERS 2, which is quite a wait:

Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in THE AVENGERS? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until THE AVENGERS 2. So there’s a lot of time to think about it. Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in THE AVENGERS is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.

The Marvel universe is certainly going with a space theme as it now includes Thanos and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and I think a tragic and powerful ending to THE AVENGERS 2 would be if Banner completely lost himself as the Hulk as he tries to save humanity but is then blasted into space by the other Avengers. It could get deliver that emotional blow without having to kill off a major character. No matter what though, I want more Hulk and the sooner the better.

THE AVENGERS 2 is released 1st May 2015. It stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Samuel L Jackson.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
