Raiders Of The Lost Ark IMAX Review

Director: Steven Speilberg

Starring: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, John Rhys-Davies, Paul Freeman, Ronald Lacey, Denholm Elliot

Certificate: PG

Running Time: 115 Mins

Synopsis: Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Ford) sets out to stop the Nazis in order to find the Ark of the Covenant. Awesomeness ensues.

Thirty-one years on and RAIDERS still hasn’t lost any of its magic. It’s still fun, action packed, thrilling, occasionally nasty, entertaining, and best of all, cooler then a double portion of chilled monkey brains.  But how does it fare when presented in glorious IMAX, I hear you ask?

The answer, you’ll be happy to hear, is great! The exhaustive, frame-by-frame restoration to the film is glorious, giving Douglas Slocombe’s cinematography a sharp and detailed vibrancy to which previous re-releases have barely come close.  The enhancement is superb, to the point that you can actually see the moment when a fly crawls into Paul Freeman’s mouth, something we Indy fans have been robbed of for years until now. But in all seriousness, the film is gorgeous to look at when presented in IMAX.

Ben Burtt’s sound design comes off the best however, restored from the original master mix, corrected to remove any previous technical flaws, and presented in immersive IMAX stereo surround. Simply put, RAIDERS has never sounded better. Just wait for that iconic theme to kick in, and you’ll know what I mean.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK must simply be seen in the IMAX format. The picture and sound restoration is second to none, and the film itself is still as exciting and awe inspiring as it was when it was first released in cinemas way back in 1981!. The only disappointing thing about seeing RAIDERS again on a big IMAX screen is knowing that TEMPLE OF DOOM and LAST CRUSADE won’t be getting the same treatment.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is released in UK IMAX theatres Friday 21st September for one week only.

INDIANA JONES: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES will be available on Blu-ray 8th August.

From an early age, Matt Dennis dreamt of one day becoming a Power Ranger. Having achieved that dream back in the noughties, he’s now turned his hand to journalism and broadcasting. Matt can often be found in front of a TV screen, watching his current favourite shows such as DOCTOR WHO, GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK, DAREDEVIL, and THE WALKING DEAD, though he’s partial to a bit of vintage TV from yesteryear. Matt also co-presents the Geek Cubed podcast, which you can download from iTunes. It’s quite nice.
