Warner Bros. Forcing 3D Conversion Upon ‘Pacific Rim’

Earlier this year Guillermo Del Toro proudly announced that his upcoming PACIFIC RIM would not be in 3D. He explained his decision eloquently and described how a 3D conversion would do nothing but harm the film:

I didn’t want to make the movie 3D because when you have things that big… the thing that happens naturally, you’re looking at two buildings lets say at 300 feet [away], if you move there is no parallax. They’re so big that, in 3D, you barely notice anything no matter how fast you move. To force the 3D effects for robots and monsters that are supposed to be big you are making their [perspective] miniaturized, making them human scale.

But you can’t always get what you want unfortunately and Warner Bros. are going ahead with a 3D conversion. Initial reports suggest that this is because of the Asian markets where 3D and IMAX means big bucks. This is especially true in the case of China. China is a growing market and has lead to production companies considering the potential numbers even before the film starts shooting. IRON MAN 3 is casting big named Chinese stars to ensure a decent financial haul.

MEN IN BLACK III, TITANIC 3D, THE AVENGERS, and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL have all made big bucks in China this year. Even domestic failures such as BATTLESHIP and JOHN CARTER took in decent amounts of cash. With the rise in piracy, if this is what Hollywood needs to do to cover their behinds a bit then I suppose it’s OK. PACIFIC RIM is one of my most anticipated films of next year, but it wont be getting a single penny from me via 3D showings, but if the story is strong and the film enjoyable, I may see it twice or even three times. Perhaps Warner Bros. could take that into consideration.

PACIFIC RIM is released 12th July 2013. It stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.
