Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER premiered at this years Toronto International Film Festival to much acclaim. However, the Venice Film Festival did become a bit of a farce earlier this month, after Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman walked away with a joint award for Best Leading Actor and the picture initially winning Best Film. However, THE MASTER was soon stripped of the latter title due to a new ruling of not allowing a film to win more than three awards with Anderson having also won Best Director.
The film follows Phoenix’s war veteran who after returning home, is disillusioned with life and ultimately becomes fascinated by Hoffman’s religious leader and his followers. Below we have another clip from the film that will hit cinemas 9th November and will certainly be a favourite on Oscar night. Beware….there is strong language.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
