Joss Whedon Gives James Gunn Seal Of Approval For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

I don’t profess to know much when it comes to comics and their legendary characters’ origins (bugger all, in fact), other than what I’ve learnt while watching classic SPIDER-MAN or HULK cartoons as a kid. But I do love a good comic-book movie. Whilst GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is something even more unfamiliar to me than the standard fare, the fact it’s a Marvel title means I’ll be one of the first ones in queue when it eventually makes it to the big-screen in 2014. What gets me even more excited is that James Gunn could be the man to lead them into battle… and Joss Whedon thinks likewise, which is almost a confirmation that the Gunn’s landed the gig.

Whedon, the writer and director of box-office behemoth AVENGERS ASSEMBLE looks to have given his thumbs up to Gunn’s potential involvement in a big-budget treatment of another beloved Marvel Universe-set adventure:

James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ And then they said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Oh, then no, you’re fine.’ He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials. People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed]Super.

He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!

Gunn’s films are certainly unique with great, gore-filled horror comedy SLITHER and superhero-wannabe SUPER some of his best. We’ll keep you posted on any casting and directing confirmation.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
