THN At Future Cinema’s Fantastic ‘Grease’ Event

As I write this at in the early hours of the morning, I’m still a wee bit drunk and very over excited.  Seriously, I haven’t stopped singing ‘We Go Together’ for about an hour. Why?  Because I’ve just returned home from a great night in Barnes, courtesy of the fantastic team at Future Cinema!

Arriving at the secret location dressed in full 1950’s attire (quiffs, Leather Jackets, the works), myself and my good friend James Docherty were instantly confronted by a bunch of T-Birds, who happened to be driving past in Grease Lightning itself, and welcomed back to Rydell High for the new semester.  Walking on, we were encouraged by Coach Calhoun to try out for the Football Team, which resulted in us running at and tackling a petrified Eugene.

The folks at Future Cinema (sorry, I meant the guys and gals at Rydell High School) have gone all out once again in recreating the setting of the movie.  A huge, fully decked out 50s Diner serves Franks and Shakes (as well as alcoholic refreshment for those old enough), whilst a brilliant live band played song after jive-inducing song in a dance hall that had been set up to resemble the dance hall from the film.  The real highlight though was the funfair, which was jam packed all night.

Once it was dark, it was time for the bit we’d all been waiting for – the film.  Presented in a gloriously clean print and projected onto an absolutely colossal screen, the audience (and myself) were enraptured, cheering when key characters appeared on screen, singing and dancing along with the songs (which was fully encouraged by the Future Cinema Cast-Members), and above all, having a bloody good time!  GREASE is today still an excellent, energetic, memorable musical masterpiece, and is best enjoyed when watched in the manner I’ve just described.

An absolutely cracking night out, Future Cinema’s GREASE live event is a perfect event for all ages!  It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s what you do with your dancin’ shoes’!

Future Cinema’s Grease event has run 7th, 8th and 9th September.  For tickets and future information, you have to visit http://www.futurecinema.co.uk/tickets

From an early age, Matt Dennis dreamt of one day becoming a Power Ranger. Having achieved that dream back in the noughties, he’s now turned his hand to journalism and broadcasting. Matt can often be found in front of a TV screen, watching his current favourite shows such as DOCTOR WHO, GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK, DAREDEVIL, and THE WALKING DEAD, though he’s partial to a bit of vintage TV from yesteryear. Matt also co-presents the Geek Cubed podcast, which you can download from iTunes. It’s quite nice.
