Over the years, Neil Jordan’s directorial output has been as stunning and as impressive as any filmmaker, without him crossing too far into the mainstream. He’s always been a director that is able to gain top performances from his cast members and tell fascinating, believable stories, despite the budget restrictions in whatever genre he usually works in. So for those fans of his, and film in general, you should be excited by his return to the vampire genre with BYZANTIUM.
BYZANTIUM sees Gemma Arterton and Saorise Ronan as Eleanor and Clara, a pair of immortal lost souls travelling the country with a bloodthirsty dark secret. After wandering into a lonely coastal resort, they meet Noel. Once Noel hears of their hunger for human blood, their past soon catches up with them – and with fatal results. The film is currently gaining rave reviews at this years Toronto International Film Festival, but we’re still awaiting a release date here in the UK.
In the meantime, check out this beautifully shot, haunting first clip from the film, that co-stars Caleb Landry Jones, Jonny Lee Miller, Daniel Mays, Tom Hollander and Sam Riley.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
