For nearly forty years Troma Entertainment have produced bizarre B-movies such as POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD, TROMEO AND JULIET and cult favourite THE TOXIC AVENGER. Now the world’s longest running independent film studio have released over 150 of their films on their youtube channel for free. Yes, complete, full length films. FOR FREE.
The brainchild of Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, Troma films are infamous for embracing gratuitous amounts of blood, sex and gore, and having a jolly old time while doing it. They have always actively encouraged and aided low-budget and independent filmmakers, even providing funding to help them create their own movies, and while they’ve fallen on hard times in recent years, Troma are still held in high regard by many film fans worldwide. They’ve also cast many well-known actors in their early days, such as Kevin Costner, Billy Bob Thornton, Samuel L. Jackson and director Oliver Stone, among others.
With the recent Brett Ratner remake of MOTHER’S DAY, and murmerings of a TOXIC AVENGER rehash, this seed of renewed interest in Troma’s films will hopefully mean Lloyd Kaufman can continue making awfully cheesy movies for many years to come.
While Troma films might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and even if you’re a Serious Sam and only watch Sean Penn films, so what? Chill out and check out CHOPPER CHICKS IN ZOMBIE TOWN or RABID GRANNIES. Why on earth wouldn’t you?
Here’s FEROCIOUS FEMALE FREEDOM FIGHTERS to get you started.
