It was rumoured a few weeks back that Jim Carrey would take on the role of The Colonel in KICK-ASS 2. Those rumours have now been confirmed as true thanks to a Tweet from director Jeff Wadlow:
6 days till we start shooting… and we officially have our Colonel. Alrighty f’n then!
The use of Carrey’s catchphrase seemed to confirm the casting and then comic book creator Mark Millar chimed in with some comments of his own on his blog:
Matthew Vaughn, Jeff Wadlow and I did a conference call with Jim a couple of weeks back and we’ve been itching to talk about this ever since because the energy Jim’s going to bring to Colonel Stars has me buzzing as much as Nic Cage with Big Daddy. We didn’t quite know what Jim was going to be doing in the sequel, but the entire team loves him to bits and I’ve been a fan since I first saw him. I remember reading an interview with Spielberg, a great one back in Empire for a JAWS anniversary, where he was saying that Jim would be his choice for Chief Brodie were he shooting Jaws now. He said he could see the brilliant dramatic range Jim had as well as the comedy people knew him for at that time.
The Colonel is a man that gathers together a group of super-heroes, kind of like the Kick-Ass universe’s THE AVENGERS. The most interesting thing about this casting to me is that this will be Jim Carrey’s first non-lead role since the late 1980’s. Apart from another comic book movie, BATMAN FOREVER. Does this suggest a change of path in Carrey’s career? I think there are hundreds of roles throughout the last 20 years that Carrey could have played if he were willing to take second/third/fourth billing. It will be great to see how he does as part of an ensemble.
Mark Millar also teased at some more exciting casting news in the future:
The movie runs from Hit-Girl #1 to Kick-Ass 2 #7 and fans of the comic will know that the part of Uncle Ralphie is still to be announced. He’s the big bad from the Hit-Girl series and you, my friends, are in for a treat.
KICK ASS 2 is released 19th July 2013. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Donald Faison, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, John Leguizamo, and Jim Carrey.

His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
