Great Expectations Stills Are Even Better Than We’d Hoped

Here are some fantastic stills from Mike Newell’s new production of GREAT EXPECTATIONS by Charles Dickens.

These shots have been seen online before, but here they are in fantastically high resolution. We see future megastar Jeremy Irvine (WAR HORSE, NOW IS GOOD) alongside Holliday Grainger (ANNA KARENINA, BEL AMI), Ralph Feinnes (SKYFALL, CORIOLANUS), Jason Flemyng (practically everything) and Helena Bonham Carter (LES MISERABLES, THE KING’S SPEECH) as Ms Haversham. Although by the looks of it, that could just be her watching telly with Tim Burton.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Young orphan Pip is given a chance to rise from his humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class ridden world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new found position to pursue the beautiful Estella; a spoilt heiress he’s loved since childhood. Yet the shocking truth behind his great fortune will have devastating consequences for everything he holds dear.

This adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic and finest novel is directed by Mike Newell, produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, and written by acclaimed screenwriter and novelist David Nicholls.

This is something of a HARRY POTTER reunion. Mike Newell directed THE GOBLET OF FIRE with Robbie Coltrane (who stars here as Mr Jaggers) and Ralph Feinnes while Carter joined the series in the next installment, THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. In fact, if you watch the trailer below, there is something of a parallel as Mr Jaggers informs Pip, our young hero, that he has been summoned away on a mysterious adventure. This is pretty much what Coltrane’s Hagrid did in the first Potter adventure, while Feinnes and Bonham Carter once again take antagonistic roles.

The film also stars Sally Hawkins, David Walliams, and Ewen Bremner. It is adapted by David Nicholls, who transferred his own novels ONE DAY and STARTER FOR TEN to the big screen. He’s also well versed at scripting literary classics, as he wrote Tess of the D’Ubervilles and Much Ado About Nothing for the BBC and is currently working on a new version of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on the 11th of September then close the BFI London Film Festival on the 21st of October. It will then open nationwide on the 30th of November. Here’s the trailer.
