Hugh Laurie Out Of RoboCop Reboot!

Things weren’t looking good for Jose Padhila’s ROBOCOP remake after word on the new script got out and it seemed that wholesale changes were on the horizon for the Detroit cyborg’s return to the big-screen. Anything is controversial when giving a beloved classic a make-over, but these were essentially a totally new spin on Paul Verhoeven’s ultra-violent masterpiece, with a number of the original characters being sidelined (or even gender-changed).

More bad news on the way as Hugh Laurie has confirmed he won’t be taking the villain role of the greedy head of OmniCorp (a role previously played by the great Ronny Cox, albeit with a name change and not the only one). In fact he was never onboard in the first place with negotiations still ongoing until today, as those talks have now broken down. We just need Gary Oldman to drop out and you can effectively say the new ROBOCOP reboot will be ‘part man, part machine…all shit’.

The film will be released 9th August 2013 with Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Ehle, Jean Marianne-Baptiste and of course Oldman starring…possibly?!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
